best bet is to wait until the new solar panels are developed as they will work w/o having to be aligned constantly and utilize almost 97% of the power they absorb as opposed to the 57-75% of the current panels available today. References :

Simplest way is hire a COMPETENT contractor, as there are many various ways to do this.
Needed parts are sufficient solar panels (to generate needed power), charge controller, battery stack (for "storage" for nights and/or cloudy days), inverter(s) (for AC output.) ALSO a backup generator is a good idea!! References : experience

Add insulation and plug all air leaks, consider upgrading your windows and exterior doors, get CFL light bulbs and upgrade your furnace/boiler to 93% efficient and switch to an on demand tank-less hot water heater. Then consider a solar system… Passive solar can be added if you have good southern exposure, by adding windows so more light gets in during the winter months. But you need a thermal mass like a tile or concrete floor. Active hot water systems can be added to your roof for showers, dish washing and laundry. A solar hot air box is one of the simplest things to build, just add a solar fan… here are some links to ponder. When I Goggled "Do it yourself solar", over 3,000,000 sites came up!
